The day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day and Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) in the Latin Rite of the Catholic, Anglican, and some Lutheran churches. The forty-day Lenten season concludes with Easter. Fat Tuesday’s celebration date is subject to change; for instance, it is observed on February 13 this year, but on March 4 in 2025.

There are parades and carnival activities to commemorate Mardi Gras in some nations, like the United States. Pancakes are traditionally baked in other English-speaking countries, especially the UK. This is your last chance to treat yourself before a prolonged fasting period. As customs and recipes have evolved, you can now indulge in traditional pancakes on Fat Tuesday, French crepes, Indian dosas, and Japanese soufflé pancakes.

For those who want to make their own pancakes, we leave a recipe for pancakes in cheese sauce with ham, which the late Elizabeth II loved. 

Ingredients for the sauce: 
• 125 g grated gruyere,
• 275 ml low-fat milk,
• 200 g ham,
• 150 g leeks, 
• 40 g butter,
• 40 g flour.

Prep:

  1. Begin by baking pancakes using your preferred recipe.
  2. Heat the milk in one frying pan, melt the butter in another, and whisk in the flour to make the sauce. Whisk continuously as you add warm milk to the butter and flour mixture.
  3. After the mixture is smooth and liquid, add the cheese to the pan and reserve a small amount in another container. Stir and add salt and pepper for seasoning.
  4. Finely chop and peel the leeks. Cut the ham into cubes after boiling.
  5. Spoon cheese sauce over pancakes after adding ham and onions.
  6. Form the pancakes into tubes, cover them with the leftover mixture, and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes.
